YOUTH group Anakbayan condemned the Aquino government and its PNP for various attempts to sabotage the Abolish Pork “EDSA TAYO” protest.
Earlier yesterday, various groups have assembled to march to EDSA and participate in the peaceful prayer vigil organized by concerned citizens and religious groups.
Thousands of riot police were mobilized, already waiting around EDSA-Ortigas to block the roads and stop various contingents from marching and participating.
Our contingent of about a thousand people led by Anakbayan, Alliance of Concerned Teachers, Kilusang Mayo Uno and Gabriela, was blocked as we marched to EDSA shrine. The police commander said we cannot proceed because we had placards and banners.
We explained to them that they had no business blocking us and that there are arrangements regarding banner placements and regulations with the organizers, which does not concern them and which should not be used to prohibit participation from the vigil.
But to be able to join the contingent already at EDSA shrine, we asked our members to fold their banners and flags just so we can march to the venue. Everyone folded their placards and banners, but the police refused to give way and instead continued to harass the participants.
We marched on and convinced them to let us walk to EDSA shrine. They were obviously looking for reasons to make trouble. They were pointing to a small cartolina sign and bond paper sign brought by a participant as reason not to allow us to go further. They were harassing us and blocking our path, until people already in the shrine started shouting at them, and chanted: “Papasukin! Papasukin!”
“We successfully entered the shrine and joined EDSA interfaith vigil which turned out to be a success.
The police terror showed the desperation and paranoia of the Aquino administration. These Martial Law tactics are being employed to divide us and to seek to undermine our unity against pork barrel and corruption under his administration. We will not be cowed, t he group said.
“We demand that the PNP not be allowed to employ further such terror tactics during next protest activities and not be allowed on rally sites. We condemn the Aquino administration for its efforts to sabotage the protests.
Congratulations to EDSA TAYO.
Congratulations also to UP, Miriam and Ateneo for their successful Katipunan Kontra Kurupsyon unity noise barrage during the afternoon. Thousands marched and chanted!
Let’s #ForwardMarch! See you all on Sept 13, 3pm, Luneta.
