SINGAPORE Telecom Ltd. (SingTel) has adopted a Gawad Kalinga Village in Madridejos, Bantayan Island in Northern Cebu to benefit residents who were displaced by Super Typhoon Yolanda.
SingTel allocated P2.5 million for the construction of 20 houses as well as contributed to other initiatives under Project Wonderful, a program of Globe aimed at rebuilding communities via sustainable development. The funds came from an employee donation drive conducted by SingTel early this year which yielded P3.15 million.
Earlier, SingTel also donated SGD 50,000 (roughly P1.75 million) to buy food and water at the height of relief operations for Typhoon Yolanda that benefited almost 9,000 people in affected areas.
To commemorate the occasion, a ceremonial unveiling of the marker was held at the Gawad Kalinga (GK) Village in Madridejos. It was also the same site where volunteers from SingTel helped build the first few houses as part of GK’s 2011 Bayani Challenge.
