THE Philippines will attempt to set a world record for “Most People to Sign up as Organ Donor” on February 28, 2014.
The campaign dubbed as “I’m A LifeLine”, which aims to set a new Guinness World Record, is a project of the Philippine Network for Organ Sharing (PHILNOS) under the Department of Health (DOH) in cooperation with the Philippine Information Agency (PIA).
Dr. Antonio Paraiso, program manager of the of the Philippine Organ Donation and Transplantation Program- National Kidney and Transplant Institute (PODTP-NKTI) DOH- said, organ donations and transplantations have long been in place in the country but they remain unacceptable for many Filipinos.
Paraiso said this is because of the lack of understanding and awareness about its processes and consequences, thus preventing many from donating their organs.
“Through this attempt to break Guinness records, we hope to promote and raise awareness about organ donations in the country,” he said.
“We are simply asking the people to pledge; to leave a legacy that in the event they die in such a manner, their organs can be used for transplantation,” he said.
Under the program, a lifeline card will be issued to those who will sign up and there will be a national registry.
There are six sign-up sites for the Guinness bids: Track and Field of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines in Sta. Mesa, Manila; Quezon City Circle in Quezon City; RTMC, San Fernando City, La Union; L. Mamba Gym in Tuguegarao City, Cagayan; JMR Coliseum in Naga City; and in Almendra’s Gym, Davao City in Davao del Sur.
