Davao City –The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) here sent on Sunday some 5,514 family food packs to the local government of Davao Oriental for families affected by flash floods triggered by continuous rains since Thursday.
This is in response to the request of the provincial government for augmentation of relief assistance to meet the needs of the victims.
DSWD conducted rapid assessment on Sunday in Davao Oriental, Davao Del Norte and Compostela Valley while rescue operations were undertaken by the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), Philippine National Police (PNP) and Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (PDRRMC) and volunteer groups.
According to DSWD-Field Office XI Assistant Regional Director Mila T. Segovia, 10,000 family food packs are being prepositioned by DSWD at the Inter-agency Disaster Operations Center at DPWH Depot, Panacan.
The Regional Office here plans to produce 10,000 food packs daily to meet the requirements of affected families.
Segovia stressed that DSWD has also mobilized its Social Welfare and Development Teams in each province and activated its Disaster Quick Response Team at the Regional Office to promptly respond to disaster operations.
Further, DSWD is looking into providing non-food items like cooking pots, kitchen utensils, pails, blankets, and plates to the affected families.
DSWD reports show that to date, a total of 14,220 families were affected composed of 69,968 individuals. Of this figure, 1,391 families are occupying evacuation centers.
Among the damaged infrastructures are dikes and bridges while some roads were rendered impassable due to landslides.
