MANILA—As the 2nd Catholic Social Media Summit draws near, the head of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) pointed out that the summit is a great help to the Church’s mission of evangelization.
“The inspiration of the summit is the declaration of Pope Paul VI in Evangelii Nuntiandi, n. 45: ‘The Church would feel guilty before the Lord if it failed to use the media for evangelization’,” CBCP President and Cebu Archbishop Jose S. Palma said in his message for the summit.
“The call to proclaim Christ’s redeeming love is a continuing call in this modern day and age. The birth and rise of social media, which opened the gates to build connections among people all over the world, becomes a fertile ground where we, as Christ’s faithful, can bring across the message of salvation, especially to the young,” he added.
Palma emphasized the urgency of using the internet for new evangelization by quoting Proposition 18 of the Synod on New Evangelization.
“The use of means of social communication has an important role to play in order to reach every person with the message of salvation. In this field, especially in the world of electronic communications, it is necessary that convinced Christians be formed, prepared and made capable to transmit faithfully the content of the faith and of Christian morality.”
Palma also encouraged everyone especially the young people to participate and have a meaningful experience in order to help in the Church’s mission of evangelization and to strive to become more effective and authentic evangelizers in the world of social media.
“Let us explore and utilize the use of social media in making Christ’s love heard, felt and experienced by the young people. So that in turn, they may respond to His invitation of initimate friendship—a life of discipleship,” the archbishop furthered.
CSMS v2.0 will be held on November 23-24, 2013 at the Colegio de San Juan de Letran in Intramuros, Manila, with Msgr. Paul Tighe, secretary of the Pontifical Council for Social Communication’s as the keynote speaker.
