WORKERS led by national labor center Kilusang Mayo Uno said today that the government’s tactic of using the Zamboanga City crisis as a diversion from the pork barrel issue will surely boomerang at Pres. Noynoy Aquino.
The workers, who assembled at the corner of Recto and Avenida then marched to Liwasang Bonifacio and then to Luneta, said the Aquino government overreacted to actions of the Moro National Liberation Front with the objective of diverting the public’s attention away from the pork barrel scandal.
KMU said the Aquino government refuses to solve the root causes of the Bangsamoro people’s secessionist movement, sidelined the MNLF in its so-called peace efforts, has taken a militarist approach towards the MNLF, is insensitive to the current plight of the residents of Zamboanga City, and is not exhausting all means towards a peaceful resolution of the crisis.
“If the Aquino regime thinks that it will be able to divert the public’s attention away from the pork barrel scam and the pork barrel system through this crisis, then it is gravely mistaken. The Edsa Tayo protest and today’s protest show that Filipinos remain angry over the pork barrel system, are keeping a close watch on the issue, and continue to clamor for change,” said Elmer “Bong” Labog, KMU chairperson.
The labor leader said that Pres. Aquino caused the Zamboanga crisis after failing to stem the people’s mounting anger over the pork barrel system with his announcement abolishing the Priority Development Assitance Fund and the surrender of Janet Lim-Napoles, chief suspect in the pork barrel scam. He also said that Aquino’s trip to the said city today is aimed at diverting attention away from the pork barrel protest and feigning concern for the residents of Zamboanga.
“The regime has overreacted to the Zamboanga crisis because it has a militarist mindset towards armed secessionist groups. It wants to destroy the MNLF and force the latter to undertake desperate moves in order to warrant the government’s use of more violence. Faced with the pork barrel scam, it is easy for the regime to decide to overreact and use the crisis to attempt to divert the public’s attention,” he added.
The labor center claimed that the Aquino regime is even using the crisis as a platform to attempt to boost Department of Interior and Local Government Sec. Mar Roxas’s presidential campaign in the 2016 elections.
“Ordinary people have become vigilant and it is easy for them to see the Aquino regime’s motives. The Aquino regime’s use of the Zamboanga crisis as a diversion will surely boomerang at Noynoy. It is revolting that Noynoy is destroying people’s lives and livelihood in Zamboanga as an attempt to weather a political crisis,” Labog said.
Labog said Aquino has become very desperate, because no less than the illusion of ‘daang matuwid’ is being eroded by the pork barrel scam. He added that the pork barrel scandal is exposing how corruption persists under Aquino, that Aquino is complicit with corruption, and that he is the No. 1 defender and benefactor of the pork barrel system.
