POLICE are hot in pursuit of two gunmen that shot and killed a member of the Highway Patrol Group (HPG) while conducting a checkpoint in Bislig City, Surigao del Sur on Tuesday.
Camp Crame reports said Wednesday that the Surigao del Sur Provincial police issued flash alarm to all local police station for the two gunmen that killed PO2 Edwin Arañes.
The reports said Arañes along with HPG auxiliaries were manning a checkpoint in Bislig City when the shooting incident took place.
Two unidentified gunmen on board a motorcycle appeared from out nowhere and shot Arañes several times and hitting him on the different parts of his body, the reports said.
The reports said that Arañes was able to cover and fire back at the two gunmen who quickly fled after the shooting.
Arañes was declared dead on arrival at the Andres Soriano Memorial Hospital Cooperative where he was rushed after the shooting incident, the reports said.
The reports said responding policemen recovered from the crime scene were several fired cartridge cases for caliber .45 and 9mm handguns; and a deformed caliber .45 bullet.
Bislig City Police Station are now conducting an investigation to determine the motive and identify the suspects, reports said.
