“THE President should not intervene in the Supreme Court proceedings involving the suspended RP Energy Coal-fired Power Plant.”
Kabataan Party-List Rep. Terry Ridon issued the statement in response to President Aquino’s apparent support for the power plant project in Monday’s State of the Nation Address.
Mr. Aquino called the opponents of the Subic Coal-Fired Power Plant “mirons”.
In January 2013, the construction of the plant was mothballed due to the invalidation by the Court of Appeals of its environmental permits and the non-approval of local government units. The CA affirmed its decision in May 2013.
With the President’s full support of the power plant, stakeholders are concerned that Malacanang is now pressuring the Supreme Court to favor RP Energy despite the non-approval of local government units affected by the power plant.
“We cannot allow Malacanang to force its hands on the High Court just to save an environmentally unsound and publicly unsupported project. We will remain vigilant to make sure the the High Court affirms the invalidation of the environmental permits.”
Ridon will file a resolution investigating the process undertaken by RP Energy in getting its environmental permits and its failure to receive the endorsements of local government units.
Before assuming public office, Ridon was the counsel of the stakeholders opposed to the power plant.
