SENATOR Juan Edgardo “Sonny” Angara will spend his birthday today (July 15) with Manila Mayor Joseph “Erap” Estrada and outgoing United States Ambassador Harry K. Thomas Jr. donating sports equipments at the Smokey Mountain “Field of Dreams” in Tondo, Manila.
The Field of Dreams inititiative, which seeks to promote a youth sports program for the community by building a baseball or football field, providing equipment and implementing a proper and sustainable training program, is a project of the Junior Chamber International (JCI) Manila in partnership with Gawad Kalinga.
“By giving the kids of Smokey Mountain the proper training and equiment, we’re giving them the chance to tap their still-to-be-discovered potentials in baseball and at the same time, empower them through sports,” Angara pointed out as he stressed:
“Noble projects such as this certainly help transform Smokey Mountain into a mountain of hopes and dreams. Who knows, the next international baseball star will be a young filipino from Tondo.”
The neophyte senator, who is a Jaycees member, noted that baseball suits the natural build of the Filipino where height is not a required advantage, but is more of a game of speed and reflexes.
“But sadly, we may have the talent but we lack the facilities and funding to foster our athletes’ development in the future,” Angara said.
More than 60 kids stand to benefit from the donations handed by the senator’s office, the U.S. Embassy and the city government of Manila.
