BAYAN MUNA Rep. Teddy Casiño today chided the Manila Water and Sewerage System (MWSS) and Manila Water at the public consultation at the Innotech Compound this morning for coming unprepared.
Neither the MWSS officials and Manila Water representatives could answer the question of Casiño on how much the company would make from the proposed water rate hike.
The Manila Water representative said that he did not have his work sheet, while the MWSS official simply could not answer.
“This is a public hearing, dapat ay pumunta kayong handa na sagutin ang tanong ng mga consumer kung magkano ang kikitain ng inyong kompanya,” Casiño reminded the Manila Water representative.
“The water concession is a favor given to you by the public. We should at least know how much money you are going to make with it,” he added.
Casiño also expressed surprise that the MWSS officials could not give a list of projects unfulfilled by Manila Water since 2008.
“How can we know whether the new rates are fair when we do not have the information on projects used as a basis for the last rate rebasing in 2008 but failed to implement? This should translate to a reduction to the proposed rate increase,” the solon said.
Manila Water and MWSS officials promised to provide Casiño with this and other data requested.
Upon Casino’s questioning Manila Water revealed that they have made 20 billion pesos since 1997 and expect to recover P426 billion in full cost recovery by 2037, excluding its profits.
